Why big windows suit a motorised blind

A blackout blind over 3m in width carries a lot of fabric, which needs to be retracted evenly every time. Coverlightโ€™s motor is built to execute this effectively. No risk of damage due to awkward manual operation, and no stretching up to reach the high-sitting bar.

The battery-operated rechargeable motor requires no wiring and takes about four hours to charge via USB-C, roughly every six months. This is based on average use of one โ€˜upโ€™ and one โ€˜downโ€™ per day (on a blind of 2.4m by 2.4m). A bigger blind or more ups/downs a day can mean charging more often.

Control motorised Coverlight with a remote or add the Smart Home Hub to run it from the app, Google Home or Alexa. See more at Motorised Blinds. Coverlight Manual is spring-operated with no chain. You raise and lower it by hand or with the pull stick for high windows.

Built for the extra width

An extra wide blind carries a lot more fabric, so itโ€™s built with a larger tube for the fabric to roll onto. Larger blinds also step up to a 75mm headbox to house the bigger roll.

Like every Coverlight blind, itโ€™s enclosed: the fabric runs in aluminium side tracks down each side, the roll sits inside the headbox and the bottom rail locks into a channel at the base.

See how side tracks close the gaps.

Measuring a wide window

Our Measuring Guide covers every step.

On a wide window, check which headbox your blind needs first. The depth and overlap figures in steps 3 and 4 are for our standard headbox. Larger blinds use a 75mm headbox, which needs more depth for a recess fit and more space above the window for a face fit. Send us your sizes or call us on 1800 482 777 and weโ€™ll confirm the measurements for your blind before you order.

  1. Measure the width three times (across the top, middle and bottom), and give us the smallest. Use a metal tape measure, because a soft tape can stretch.
  2. Measure the drop three times. Left, centre and right, and again, give us the smallest.
  3. Check the depth for a recess fit. With our standard headbox, you need 64mm of clear depth for the blind to sit flush. With at least 26mm it still fits in the recess. Less than 26mm, or a handle in the way, means a face fit.
  4. For a face fit, measure the overlap. With architraves, measure to their outside edges. With no architrave, add 42mm each side for the tracks, 85mm at the top for the standard headbox and 25mm at the bottom.
  5. Check your size against the table above. If itโ€™s over the online range, call us on 1800 482 777 for a custom quote before you order.

Recess fit: Coverlight headbox and side tracks mounted inside the window opening

Fitting an extra wide blind

Coverlightโ€™s extra-wide options are DIY installed the same way as regular sizes. Screw the headbox and tracks to the frame or architrave, fit the roll, and for a recess fit, set the expanding foam we supply. Youโ€™ll need a drill and basic hand tools.

The difference is the length. We recommend using two people for blinds over 2m wide, one at each end of the headbox. One customer who fitted a blind over 2m wide told us exactly that in their review.

There are step-by-step installation guides for each fit type. If you get stuck, call us on 1800 482 777 and our friendly team will talk you through it.

Wider than 4 m, or a sliding door?

Wider than 4m, or too big for one blind? Two blinds side by side can cover the space. Send us your sizes and a photo, or call us on 1800 482 777, and weโ€™ll work out what suits your window before you spend anything.

Sliding doors and doorways. Coverlight is made for windows, and the bottom rail locks into a channel at the base. If your window incorporates a sliding door, ask us before you order.

Where extra wide blinds make the biggest difference

Coverlightโ€™s extra-wide width makes them suitable for extra large windows both in homes and commercial spaces.

Questions about extra wide blinds

What’s the widest blind I can order online?

4000mm wide as a motorised blind, for drops up to 1700mm. On taller windows the online maximum is 2800mm or 2700mm wide, depending on the drop. For anything outside that, call us on 1800 482 777 for a custom quote.

Can I get a manual Coverlight blind wider than 3m?

No. Coverlight blinds over 3m wide are available in motorised only.

How long does the battery last on a big blind?

Our estimate is six months per charge, based on one up and down a day on a blind around 2.4m by 2.4m. A bigger blind thatโ€™s used more frequently can mean charging more often.

My window is taller than 3m. Can you make a Coverlight DIY blind to fit?

Our online range stops at a 3000mm drop. For measurements outside that, send us your measurements and call us on 1800 482 777 for a custom quote.

Do I need two people to install an extra wide blind?

We recommend two people for blinds over 2m wide. The headbox is long and itโ€™s much easier with one person holding each end.

Can I use an extra wide blind on a sliding door?

Coverlight is made for windows. Check with us before you order if your window incorporates a door or doorway.
